ABDOMINOPLASTY FAQs

What is Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck?

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery in Dubai at Hasan Surgery is a surgical procedure in which excess skin and fatty tissue are removed from the lower and middle abdomen area. This is not only targeted to remove the excess tissue but also addresses the weak abdominal muscles that can be tightened with the help of suturing (plication) of abdominal muscles.

The Tummy Tuck surgery in Dubai at Hasan Surgery removes loose, excess skin and lax abdominal muscles. In most cases, the stubborn fat deposits in and around the abdomen can also be removed through the tummy tuck procedure. However, there are specific indications for Abdominoplasty, and it is not an obesity treatment.

How is Abdominoplasty performed?

Every plastic surgeon has a particular preference and technique for performing Abdominoplasty, which may include combining it with VASER Liposuction or other body contouring surgeries.

A Tummy Tuck in Dubai at Hasan Surgery, Dubai, is tailored to suit each patient’s unique needs. The tummy tuck procedure typically involves tightening the abdominal muscles and removing excess skin and fat via liposuction. For a full tummy tuck, for instance, an incision is concealed low on the abdomen, extending from one hip to the other. For a mini tummy tuck, a shorter incision is made low on the abdomen.

Is Abdominoplasty a weight loss surgery?

No, an Abdominoplasty is not a weight loss surgery. People who are overweight should consider other weight loss treatments. It is often advised to lose weight before considering any body contouring procedures, such as a Tummy Tuck.

Although it is designed to remove excess skin, there is still no substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise. It also cannot remedy stretch marks above the belly button.

Who is an ideal candidate for Abdominoplasty oR Tummy Tuck in Dubai?

The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck in Dubai at Hasan Surgery should be a healthy person who has achieved a healthy weight. They should not have fluctuating weight or any medical condition that could interfere with wound healing.

Women should have no future pregnancy plans, as the abdominal muscles tightened during a tummy tuck surgery can separate in a future pregnancy.

A patient can qualify as a candidate for tummy tuck/ abdominoplasty if they do not smoke and want to remove unwanted abdominal skin. A pre-surgical consultation is necessary to establish realistic expectations of the procedure’s outcome.

Before ensuring your candidature for the Abdominoplasty, your plastic surgeon will review your medical history and past and present health condition. You will have to discuss your medication, including any herbal supplements.

As a possible Abdominoplasty candidate, you must have realistic expectations about the resultant appearance of your abdominal area after the procedure. You must stop smoking before and after the surgery, as tobacco can slow the blood flow to the skin and thereby slow down the healing process.

Your plastic surgeon will check your previous medical history before recommending the procedure. The surgery will show desirable results only on people who are generally healthy and do not have any prior history of having cardiac issues, pulmonary emboli, excessive bleeding, seizures, immunodeficiency disorders, or deep vein thrombosis. People with such conditions are discouraged from undergoing this procedure due to a higher risk of surgical complications.

People on specific anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant drugs are also discouraged from undergoing a tummy tuck surgery. Further, people with poor skin elasticity are also less suitable candidates for the procedure.

Is Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck Surgery suitable for men?

Yes, both men and women can undergo an abdominoplasty/tummy tuck surgery if the above conditions for suitability are met. Abdominoplasty in men gives equally effective results.

As a matter of fact, due to the growing number of weight-loss surgeries, more and more men are opting for a tummy tuck to correct excess hanging abdominal skin after a weight loss surgery.

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery in Dubai at Hasan Surgery for men can be combined with waist liposuction to correct love handles. Alternatively, men may opt for abdominal etching or 6-pack surgery to get the sought-after “six-pack” abs.

What are the different types of Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck surgeries?

The abdominal area is divided into 2: the upper and lower abdominal areas. Depending on the area targeted, there could be five variations of Tummy Tuck surgeries:

Standard or Full Tummy Tuck – A full tummy tuck involves the tightening of abdominal muscles by removing excess fat and skin. The procedure focuses on both the upper and lower abdominal areas. It may include repositioning the belly button. The incision for a full tummy tuck runs above the pubic area- from hip to hip.

Mini Tummy Tuck – A Mini Tummy Tuck focuses on removing fat and loose skin in the lower abdomen, below the belly button. The Mini Tummy Tuck is, therefore, a shorter version of a full Tummy Tuck procedure. The incision for a mini tummy tuck is smaller than a full tummy tuck and made just above the pubic area.

Extended Tummy Tuck – An Extended Tummy Tuck is meant for people with significant excess skin in their lower abdomen and love handles. It is a more extensive and invasive surgery involving removing and repositioning the belly button. The incision for an extended tummy tuck runs from hip to hip.

Reverse Tummy Tuck – Sometimes, people have a fine lower abdominal area, but their upper torso – just under the breasts – has excess skin and tissue. A reverse tummy tuck tackles this concern. It is often performed in connection with breast surgeries. The incision, in this case, is hidden under the breast folds.

Panniculectomy – A panniculectomy involves removing excess skin and fatty tissue from the hanging lower abdomen. It is usually performed when a pannus or overhang of abdominal tissue is present, which can be removed. This surgery specifically targets tissue removal. Many plastic surgeons use different techniques for this unique procedure, removing the hanging tissue without correcting the abdominal muscles or other contour irregularities of the abdominal areas. Strictly speaking, a panniculectomy is not an Abdominoplasty. The incision for a panniculectomy runs from hip to hip.

What is the difference between Abdominoplasty and Liposuction?

While both Abdominoplasty and Liposuction are body contouring surgeries, they are not the same.

Liposuction is intended to reduce stubborn fat in specific areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction can be carried out for the face, neck, arms, breast, chest, back, abdomen, flanks, hips, thighs, and legs.

An Abdominoplasty is meant for the surgical removal of excess skin around the abdominal area and tightening of the abdominal muscles to give a tighter, contoured abdomen. It is generally performed after significant weight loss (from pregnancy/ weight loss surgery) that has resulted in excessive hanging abdominal skin. Liposuction is often combined with Abdominoplasty to give better results depending on the surgeon’s preference and the patient’s specific circumstances.

What is a Mommy Makeover? How is Mommy Makeover different from Tummy Tuck?

A Tummy Tuck is a single procedure indicated for women (or men) whose concerns are restricted to their abdomen and do not require procedures for other body parts.

On the other hand, a Mommy Makeover involves more than one procedure. It is intended for more comprehensive body contouring and combines an Abdominoplasty with other body contouring surgeries such as Liposuction, Breast Lift, Breast Reduction, or Breast Augmentation. It addresses concerns about a woman’s body affected due to pregnancy.

What is the cost of Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck in Dubai?

The cost of Abdominoplasty or Tummy tuck in Dubai depends on the following factors:

  • Skill and experience of the plastic surgeon
  • Standard of the clinic/ hospital where the surgery will be performed
  • Amount of skin to be removed
  • Extent of body contouring involved
  • Whether the procedure is combined with any other surgeries

It is advised to get an initial consultation from a specialist plastic surgeon to know the cost applicable to your case and your eligibility for the procedure.

What anesthesia is usually given for Abdominoplasty?

At our clinic in Dubai, Mini-Abdominoplasty can be performed under IV sedation anesthesia. However, Full Abdominoplasty is often performed under general anesthesia at our accredited hospital.

When can I resume normal activities after my Abdominoplasty?

Since a tummy tuck surgery involves surgery of the abdominal muscles too, the recovery period is longer. We recommend you schedule 2-4 weeks off from work after your abdominoplasty. The healing and recovery after the surgery need more allotted time.

The time for recovery also depends on the type of tummy tuck surgery done – i.e., full/ mini/ extended.

Take note that even after the two weeks off for a mini tummy tuck, you might be required to avoid specific activities until you fully recover. For people whose work involves strenuous physical activities, you’ll need an extended time of another two weeks to wait for your full recovery.

Women with small kids will need help at home with carrying and taking care of the kids. Carrying even a small baby is not advisable for 2-4 weeks after the surgery.

What are the possible risks and side effects of Abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery in Dubai at Hasan Surgery is a safe procedure in the hands of a skilled plastic surgeon, but the following complications may be seen:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Temporary numbness
  • Infection
  • Allergic reactions
  • Hematoma / seroma (blood/ fluid accumulation in the skin)
  • Prominent scarring or Keloid formation
  • Wound dehiscence or wound separation

What recovery and post-operative precautions are needed after a Tummy Tuck surgery?

Most patients experience pain and discomfort after the surgery when anesthesia effects diminish.

Immediately after the Abdominoplasty surgery, your abdomen will feel tender and sore. Compression bandages will be given to help minimize the swelling. Sometimes, a small tube may be placed in your abdomen to drain the excess blood and lymph fluid. After removing the bandages and the tube, your plastic surgeon will recommend you wear a compression sleeve for a few weeks to aid the healing process and keep the swelling down. It is normal to feel some loss of sensation in the treated areas. This temporary numbness will go away once you are completely healed.

Most people will need two weeks of complete bed rest. The pain, redness, swelling, and bruising will start to subside in 1-3 weeks. You should get plenty of rest during this time, though you should walk lightly to promote circulation and avoid blood clots.

During your first week of recovery, you can expect issues with pain and bruising. The pain is managed with prescribed medications, and the bruising through cold compresses or Arnica gel.

After the first week of recovery, it is necessary to do a follow-up visit with your plastic surgeon to monitor your progress— to check the incision sites. Attend all your follow-up visits to help with the entire recovery process.

Because you need a lot of bed rest for the first two weeks, you must have help at home for all your tasks and chores.

When will the results of my Abdominoplasty be visible?

Post-surgery, there will be an immediate visible improvement in the shape and appearance of your abdominal area. Most of the loose and sagging skin would have gone. Over 6 months, you will see a noticeable improvement in the overall appearance of your abdominal area. After the first year, the scars usually start to fade, but they will not completely disappear.

How can I maintain the results of my Abdominoplasty?

For best results, strictly follow the care instructions of your plastic surgeon before and after the surgery. The improvement in the abdominal muscles from a tummy tuck is long-lasting. Your tummy will remain firm. Similarly, the excess skin that’s removed will not return. However, your results can be negatively affected if you gain weight. Likewise, for women, future pregnancies can affect your results. For lasting results, maintain a stable and healthy weight.
