Is It A Good Idea to Get an Otoplasty?

Otoplasty or ear surgery is a surgical procedure to reshape the ear. An ear surgery involves various technique to reshape congenital prominence in the ears or to restore damaged ears.  Individuals who are considering an otoplasty is unique both in the appearance of their ears and expectations for results after the surgery. It is important to fully discuss with your plastic surgeon before you undergo surgery in Dubai.

Do you need an otoplasty? What causes prominent ears? Is it worth it to remodel your ears?

Otoplasty or ear surgery is the surgical contouring of the outer ear. It aims to correct a deformity or to enhance the appearance of your ears. In reconstructive surgery, it deals with restoring the outer ear caused by an accident or by a congenital deformity. However, there also individuals who desire to pin back their ears to improve their overall looks, which is considered a cosmetic procedure.

Why undergo an otoplasty or ear surgery?

Prominent ears can be an embarrassment which can lead to lower self-esteem. Prominent ears stand out more than 2 cm from the side of the head. It is children who commonly undergo the procedure, but the procedure can be performed on patients regardless of age.

Most people’s outer ears are on the side of their head at about 20 to 35 degrees. If the angle exceeds 35 degrees, they appear to “stick out.”

Prominent ears occur for such reasons:

  1. Overdevelopment of the cartilage: if the outer ear has too much cartilage
  2. Underdevelopment of the cartilage: the outer edge of the ear sticks outward
  3. Injury: prominent ears caused by an injury to the ears.

Otoplasty

Otoplasty done by a professional plastic surgeon in Dubai aims to correct or reconstruct a deformity in the ears. Undergoing an ear surgery can reshape the cartilage to create the appearance of missing folds and position the ear closer to the head.

There are three main types of otoplasty:

  1. Ear augmentation – for underdeveloped pinna
  2. Otopexy – corrects protruding ears.
  3. Ear reduction – reduce the size of a too large pinna

What to expect during an ear surgery?

A local or general anaesthesia is used when the surgery is being performed. The plastic surgeon makes an incision behind the ear. The procedure typically lasts 1-2 hours. The surgery can give the appearance of a thin scar; however, it is placed behind the ear, so it is less visible. The scar will also fade over time.

Recovery

After surgery, the patient will have bandages over their ears for a few days. After removing the bandages, a headband is worn over the ears to help remove its tension. The headband should be loose, so the ears will not be pulled forward.

You can return to work within a week after the surgery while you can resume with regular activity and exercise after 2 weeks. Rigorous sports should be prevented for at least 3 months while swimming should be avoided for up to 8 weeks.

Is it worth it?

An otoplasty or an ear surgery is a safe surgical process with high success rates. Otoplasty provides a better quality of life to patients after the surgery. It can provide them self-confidence especially with the way they look. So, to conclude— yes, it is worth it.
